એક સૂર્ય આકાશમાં મધ્યાહ્ને છે અને બીજો સૂર્ય વહેલી પરોઢે ક્ષિતિજેથી ડોકિયું કરવાની તૈયારી કરી રહ્યો છે!
એક બાજુ સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદની દોઢસોમી જન્મજયંતીનો આનંદોલ્લાસ પરાકાષ્ઠાએ પહોંચ્યો છે, ત્યારે એ જ સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદ સાથે વિશ્વધર્મ પરિષદમાં ભારતીય સંસ્કૃતિની ગૌરવગર્જના કરનાર વીરચંદ રાઘવજી ગાંધીની આગામી વર્ષે શરૃ થનારી દોઢસોમી જન્મજયંતિનો પ્રારંભ થઈ ચૂક્યો છે.
થોડા સમય પૂર્વે ભારતના પ્રધાનમંત્રી ડૉ. મનમોહન સિંહના પ્રધાનમંત્રી નિવાસસ્થાનમાં પૂ. શ્રી લોકેશમુનિના સાન્નિધ્યમાં તથા સાંસ્કૃતિક મંત્રી શ્રી ચંદ્રેશકુમારી કોટેચની ઉપસ્થિતિમાં યોજાયેલા પરિસંવાદમાં આ લેખકે વીરચંદ રાઘવજી ગાંધી વિશે વક્તવ્ય આપ્યું, ત્યારે ભૂતકાળની કેટલીય ઘટનાઓ ઉજાગર થઈ ગઈ હતી. આ વીરચંદ રાઘવજી ગાંધીએ ભારતીય સંસ્કૃતિની વિશ્વમાં ઘોષણા કરી, પણ એની સાથોસાથ ૧૮૯૯માં અમેરિકાના ફિલાડેલ્ફિયામાં યોજાયેલી ઈન્ટરનેશનલ કોંગ્રેસ ઓફ કોમર્સમાં ભારતના પ્રતિનિધિ તરીકે હાજર રહ્યા હતા. એ સમયે એમણે 'ટ્રેડ રિલેશન્સ બિટવિન યુનાઇટેડ સ્ટેટ્સ ઑફ અમેરિકા એન્ડ ઈન્ડિયા'એ વિષય પર વક્તવ્ય આપ્યું હતું. ભારત અને અમેરિકા વચ્ચે વાણિજ્યની સંભાવનાઓ વિશે વાત કરી હતી.
આજે આવી સંભાવના વિશે અર્થશાસ્ત્રીઓ ચર્ચા કરે છે, પણ ભારત પરાધીન હતું, એ સમયે આવી વિચારણા અમેરિકાના પ્રબુધ્ધજનો સમક્ષ પ્રસ્તુત કરનાર વીરચંદ ગાંધી વિરલ જ ગણાય. ૧૮૯૩માં અમેરિકાની રિયલ એસ્ટેટ કોંગ્રેસમાં એમણે આપેલા વક્તવ્યની 'ન્યૂયૉર્ક ટાઈમ્સે' પ્રશંસા કરી હતી, પરંતુ સૌરાષ્ટ્રના મહુવાના આ તેજસ્વી અને તરવરીયા યુવાન પર આજથી બરાબર ૧૨૦ વર્ષ પહેલાં છવ્વીસમી સપ્ટેમ્બરે 'શિકાગો ટાઈમ્સે' એક આગવી નોંધ લખી હતી અને એમાં એણે વીરચંદ ગાંધીની તાર્કિકતા અને ગરિમાની પ્રશંસા કરી હતી.
વાત એમ બની હતી કે વિશ્વધર્મ પરિષદમાં સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદ, એચ. ધર્મપાલ, વીરચંદ ગાંધી, એલ. નરેન અને નરસિંમ્હા ચારી ઈશ્ટ ઈન્ડિયાના પ્રતિનિધિઓ તરીકે ઉપસ્થિત હતા. એ વિશ્વધર્મ પરિષદના ચૌદમા દિવસે લંડનના એક પાદરીએ ભારતીય મહિલાઓ વિશે આકરી ટીકા કરી. આમેય આ વિશ્વધર્મ પરિષદનો હેતુ અન્ય ધર્મીઓ સમક્ષ ખ્રિસ્તી ધર્મનું મહિમાગાન પ્રસ્તુત કરવાનો હતો, પરંતુ સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદની પ્રતિભા અને પ્રવચનોએ એ આખીય બાજીને ફેરવી નાખી અને વીરચંદ ગાંધીના વક્તવ્યોએ એના પર ભારતીયતાની મહોર મારી.
મૂળે લંડનના એવા રેવરેન્ડ જ્યોર્જ એફ પેન્ટાકોસ્ટે ૧૮૯૩ની ૨૫મી સપ્ટેમ્બરે એમના વક્તવ્યમાં એમ કહ્યું કે 'ભારતમાં છસો જેટલી મંદિરની પુજારણો છે, જે વેશ્યા છે.' એથી આગળ વધીને એમણે કહ્યું કે, 'આ ધર્મમાં વેશ્યાઓને પૂજારણ બનાવવામાં આવે છે અને તે પૂજારણ હોય તો પણ વેશ્યાનું કામ કરતી હોય છે.' રેવરેન્ડ જ્યોર્જ એફ. પેન્ટાકોસ્ટેના આ પ્રવચને ચોતરફ ખળભળાટ મચાવી દીધો. આ પરિષદમાં સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદ અને પ્રકાશચંદ્ર મજુમદાર જેવા પ્રતિનિધિઓ આક્રોશ અનુભવી રહ્યા.
સૌરાષ્ટ્રના સિંહ એવા વીરચંદ ગાંધીએ અમેરિકાના શિકાગો શહેરની આર્ટ ઈન્સ્ટિટયૂટના કૉલમ્બસ સભાગૃહમાં ત્રણ હજાર શ્રોતાજનો સમક્ષ પોતાની સાહસિકતા અને હિંમતની સાથોસાથ ઊંડા અભ્યાસની પહેચાન આપી. તેઓએ કહ્યું, 'હું જૈન ધર્મનો પ્રતિનિધિ છું, એની ભલે કોઈએ ટીકા કરી નથી, પરંતુ હું જે ભારતીય સમાજમાંથી આવું છું તેની ટીકા કરી છે. દરેક દેશમાં ધર્મ હોવા છતાં આવાં દૂષણો પ્રવર્તમાન હોય છે, તેનાથી ધર્મને નીચો ન ગણી શકાય.'
એ પછી વીરચંદ ગાંધી ધર્મપ્રચારક પાદરીઓ પર કટાક્ષ કરતાં કહે છે કે 'કેટલાક અતિ મહત્ત્વાકાંક્ષી લોકો પોતાને સેન્ટ પૉલ માને છે અને ધારે છે કે તેઓ ઇચ્છશે તે થશે. આવા પૉલ ભારતના લોકોનું સામૂહિક ધર્માંતરણ કરવા પ્રયત્ન કરે છે, પરંતુ એ પછી એમનાં સ્વપ્નો વિફળ જતાં તેઓ ભારતથી પાછા આવીને આખી જિંદગી હિંદુ ધર્મની નિંદા કરવામાં ઘસી નાખે છે.'
વીરચંદ ગાંધી અહીં એક માર્મિક અને સચોટ વિચાર આપે છે. તેઓ કહે છે, 'કોઈપણ ધર્મ પર આક્ષેપો કરવા એ દલીલ ગણાય નહીં અને સ્વધર્મની આત્મપ્રશંસા એ સત્યનો પુરાવો મનાય નહીં. પાદરી પેન્ટાકોસ્ટની આવી ટીકા પ્રત્યે મને ખૂબ દયા આવે છે એમ કહીને તેઓ સ્પષ્ટતા કરતાં કહે છે કે દક્ષિણ ભારતનાં કેટલાંક હિંદુ મંદિરોમાં અમુક પ્રસંગોએ સ્ત્રી-ગાયિકાઓને સંગીત માટે નિમંત્રણ આપવામાં આવે છે એ સાચું અને આમાંની કેટલીક શંકાસ્પદ ચારિત્ર્ય ધરાવતી હોય છે. આ બાબત હિંદુ સમાજ જાણે છે અને તેથી આ અનિષ્ટને દૂર કરવા માટે સઘળા પ્રયત્નો પણ કરે છે. આ સ્ત્રીઓને મંદિરના મુખ્ય ભાગમાં પ્રવેશ આપવામાં આવતો નથી અને પૂજારણોની જે વાત કરવામાં આવે છે, તો એમને મારે કહેવું છે કે હિમાલયથી માંડીને કેપ કોમોરિન સુધી ક્યાંય એકે મહિલા પૂજારણ નથી. જો આવા આક્ષેપો પ્રમાણેનો સમાજ હિંદુ ધર્મે સર્જ્યો હોત, તો આ ધર્મે કયા બળે એવા સમાજનું નિર્માણ કર્યું હશે કે જેને માટે ગ્રીક ઈતિહાસવેત્તાએ કહ્યું,
''કોઈ હિંદુને અસત્ય બોલતો જાણ્યો નથી અને કોઈ હિંદુ સ્ત્રી ક્યારેય અપવિત્ર હોય એવું જાણ્યું નથી.'' આટલું કહ્યા પછી વીરચંદ ગાંધીએ પ્રબળ ટંકાર કર્યો ''હિંદુસ્તાનના જેવી ચારિત્રશીલ સ્ત્રીઓ અને વિનમ્ર પુરુષો આજેય બીજે ક્યાં જોવા મળે છે?''
પોતાના વક્તવ્યને યથાર્થ સંદર્ભમાં દર્શાવતા વીરચંદ ગાંધી કહે છે, ''જેઓ ભારતની આવી નિંદા કરે છે, તેમને માટે હું અત્યંત દિલગીરી અનુભવું છું. પણ મારા માટે સાંત્વનારૃપ બાબત એ છે કે એમને મળતી માહિતી છેક ત્રીજા કે ચોથા સ્રોત (ફોર્થ હૅન્ડ ઈન્ફર્મેશન)માંથી મળેલી હોય છે. જે વાસ્તવિક સત્ય કરતાં વહેમો અને માન્યતાઓથી ખચિત હોય છે.''
પર ધર્મની નિંદા કરવાની ટીકાનો સ્પષ્ટ ઉત્તર આપવા સાથે એક પ્રસંગ કહીને વીરચંદ ગાંધીએ ધર્મો-ધર્મો વચ્ચે પરસ્પર થતા આક્ષેપોની વ્યર્થતા બતાવી.
અનેકાન્તદ્રષ્ટિના આરાધક એવા જૈન ધર્મના પ્રતિનિધિ વીરચંદ ગાંધી પાસે મતસહિષ્ણુતા, ઉદાર દ્રષ્ટિકોણ અને પરસ્પરને પામવાની ભાવના હોય એ સ્વાભાવિક હતું. જાણે એ ભાવનાનો પડઘો પાડતા હોય તેમ વીરચંદ ગાંધીએ વિશ્વધર્મ પરિષદમાં ધર્મો-ધર્મો વચ્ચે પરસ્પર આદરભાવનાનો અભિગમ રજૂ કર્યો. એમણે એક હૃદયસ્પર્શી દ્રષ્ટાંત આપ્યું. મુસ્લિમ યાત્રાળુઓનું એક જહાજ હજ કરવા માટે મક્કા જતું હતું. રસ્તામાં પોર્ચુગીઝોએ એ વહાણને આંતરીને કબજે કર્યું. વહાણમાં કરેલી લૂંટને પરિણામે મળેલા સરસામાનમાં પવિત્ર કુરાનની કેટલીક પ્રતો હતો, જેની અવમાનના કરવામાં આવી. બન્યું એવું કે પોર્ટુગીઝોએ કબજે કરેલું જહાજ સમ્રાટ અકબરના સૈનિકોએ પકડયું અને એમને એમાંથી બાઈબલની કેટલીક પ્રત મળી. અકબર એની માતાને ચાહતો હતો અને એની માતા ચુસ્ત મુસલમાન હતી. એમણે જ્યારે જાણ્યું કે ખ્રિસ્તીઓના હાથે પવિત્ર ગ્રંથ કુરાનનું અપમાન થયું છે ત્યારે એણે વિચાર્યું કે અકબર બાઈબલ સાથે જ એ રીતે વર્તાવ કરે.
આ સમયે અકબરે કહ્યું, ''માતા, પેલા અજ્ઞાાની લોકો પવિત્ર કુરાનની મહત્તા સમજતા નહોતા. એમણે દાખવેલી વર્તણૂક એ એમની અજ્ઞાાનતાનું કારણ હતી, પણ હું તો કુરાન અને બાઈબલ બંનેની મહત્તાથી પરિચિત છું, આથી હું એ અજ્ઞાાની લોકો જેવો વ્યવહાર કરી શકું નહીં.''
વીરચંદ ગાંધીએ આ માર્મિક દ્રષ્ટાંત દ્વારા સભાગૃહમાં ધર્મોના પરસ્પરના આદરભાવનું એક ઉન્નત વાતાવરણ સર્જી દીધું.
વીરચંદ ગાંધીએ પાદરી પેન્ટાકોસ્ટના આક્ષેપોનો આપેલો જવાબ એ એક ભારતીય વિદ્વાન અને ધર્મ વિચાર કે આપેલો ઉત્તર છે. આક્ષેપો, અપશબ્દો અને પ્રહારોનો પ્રત્યુત્તર કેવી સ્વસ્થતા અને શિષ્ટતાથી આપી શકાય એ વીરચંદ ગાંધીએ દર્શાવ્યું. આથી ૧૮૯૩ની ૨૬મી સપ્ટેમ્બરના 'શિકાગો ટાઈમ્સ' અખબારે વીરચંદ ગાંધીની પ્રશંસા કરતાં લખ્યું, ''આવી મલિન ઈરાદાવાળી ટીકાનો જૈન ધર્મના પ્રતિનિધિ વીરચંદ ગાંધીએ તાર્કિક અને ગરિમાપૂર્ણ પ્રત્યુત્તર વાળ્યો.'' આવી નોંધ સાથે આ અખબારે વીરચંદ ગાંધીનું પ્રવચન અક્ષરશઃ પ્રગટ કર્યું.
એ પછીના દિવસે વિશ્વધર્મ પરિષદના પંદરમા દિવસે વીરચંદ ગાંધીએ સરળ, પ્રાસાદિક અને સર્વજનસ્પર્શી રીતે જૈન ધર્મના મુખ્ય સિદ્ધાંતોનો પરિચય આપ્યો.
અમેરિકાના અખબારોએ એમની પ્રતિભા પર પ્રશંસાનાં પુષ્પો વેર્યા અને વિશ્વધર્મ પરિષદના યોજકોએ એમને યશસ્વી કામગીરી માટે રૌપ્યચંદ્રક એનાયત કર્યો.
આ સમયે 'એડિટર્સ બ્યૂરો'એ એના તંત્રીલેખમાં વીરચંદ ગાંધી વિશે એક વિસ્તૃત લેખ લખ્યો અને એ લાંબા લેખના અંતે વીરચંદ ગાંધીની પ્રવચનશૈલી અને અમેરિકામાં સર્વત્ર સાંપડેલા આદરને દર્શાવતાં નોંધે છે,
''જ્યારે તક મળે ત્યારે ભારતના આ વતનીને સાંભળવાની એક તક પણ ગુમાવવી જોઈએ નહીં. અન્ય કોઈ જગાએ જવાને બદલે એમની પાસે સાંજે જશો, તો વધુ જ્ઞાાન અને સત્ય લાધશે. ભારત અને તેની પ્રજા વિશે પ્રવર્તતા અયોગ્ય અને ભૂલભરેલા ખ્યાલો તેઓ સુધારી શકશે. એમનું પ્રવચન પૂર્ણ થયા બાદ પ્રેક્ષકવર્ગમાંથી કોઈ પણ વ્યક્તિ પ્રશ્ન પૂછશે, તો તેઓ તેનો યોગ્ય પ્રત્યુત્તર આપશે. સત્ય અને પવિત્રતાનો ઉપદેશ આપતી આવી ઉમદા અને મહાન વ્યક્તિ એ પ્રમાણે વર્તે છે, એની પ્રશંસા માટે પૂરતા શબ્દો નથી. શ્રી ગાંધીએ આપણા દેશમાં ક્લબ, વિદ્વાનોનાં વિદ્યામંડળ, સાહિત્ય અને ચર્ચ, સોસાયટી, થિયોસૉફિકલ શાખાઓ અને આધ્યાત્મિક પરિષદ સમક્ષ પ્રવચનો આપ્યાં છે. પૌર્વાત્ય યોગવિદ્યા અંગે એમણે વર્ગો પણ ચલાવ્યા છે. તેમનું દરેક જગ્યાએ ઉષ્માભર્યું સ્વાગત કરવામાં આવે છે અને ખૂબ જ પ્રશંસા કરવામાં આવે છે.''

આવતે વર્ષે શરૃ થનારી વીરચંદ ગાંધીની દોઢસોમી જન્મજયંતિ સંદર્ભે વડાપ્રધાનના નિવાસસ્થાને યોજાયેલા આ કાર્યક્રમમાં કેલિફોર્નિયાની ક્લેરમૉન્ટ લિંકન યુનિવર્સિટીમાં 'વીરચંદ રાઘવજી ગાંધી ચેર' સ્થાપવા અંગે 'જૈના' સંસ્થાના પૂર્વ પ્રમુખ દિલીપભાઈ શાહે રજૂઆત કરી, તો શ્રીમતી સોનિયા ગાંધીએ આ કાર્ય માટે શુભકામના સંદેશ આપ્યો. વીરચંદ ગાંધીના પ્રપૌત્ર શ્રી ચંદ્રેશ ગાંધી તથા વીરચંદ ગાંધી વિશે સંશોધન કરનાર પંકજ હિંગરાજ, મહેશ ગાંધી અને અન્ય સહુ ઉપસ્થિત હતા. આ પ્રસંગે પ્રધાનમંત્રીએ કહ્યું કે ભગવાન મહાવીરના અહિંસા, શાંતિ અને જીવો અને જીવવા દોની આજના સમયમાં સૌથી વધુ જરૃર છે. દેશમાં શાંતિ અને ભાઈચારો હોય, તો જ એના વિકાસનો સંભવ છે. બિનસાંપ્રદાયિકતા એટલે ધર્મવિહીનતા નહીં, કિંતુ આધ્યાત્મિકતા છે. આજે પણ ભગવાન મહાવીરના સિદ્ધાંતો વર્તમાન સમયમાં પણ એટલા જ ઉપયોગી છે.
જ્યારે 'અહિંસા વિશ્વ ભારતી'ના સ્થાપક અને ચૅરમેનશ્રી લોકેશ મુનિજીએ આ શુભકાર્યનો પ્રારંભ કરવા માટેની ભૂમિકા આપી હતી તેમજ વિવિધ કાર્યક્રમોની રૃપરેખા આપી હતી. જ્યારે કુમારપાળ દેસાઈએ આ વિશે કરેલા સંશોધનની વિસ્તૃત રજૂઆત કરતાં કહ્યું હતું કે ૨૯ વર્ષના યુવાન વીરચંદ ગાંધીએ અમેરિકા અને ઇંગ્લૅન્ડના એમના પ્રવાસ સમયે કહ્યું કે આજે ભલે મારો દેશ પરાધીન હોય, પણ એ આઝાદ થશે એટલું જ નહીં પણ એ અહિંસાના માર્ગે આઝાદી પ્રાપ્ત કરશે.
વળી વીરચંદ ગાંધીએ એમ પણ કહ્યું હતું કે આઝાદી મળ્યા પછી મારો દેશ બીજા દેશો સાથે શાંતિમય સહઅસ્તિત્વથી રહેશે. વીરચંદ ગાંધીએ ભારતીય સંસ્કાર, જીવનશૈલી અને ભારતીય ઈતિહાસનું ગૌરવભેર વિદેશમાં બયાન કર્યું.
 ઇંગ્લેન્ડમાં બે અને અમેરિકામાં ત્રણ સંસ્થાઓની સ્થાપના કરી. માત્ર જૈન દર્શન જ નહીં, કિંતુ સાંખ્ય, યોગ, વૈશેષિક અને બૌદ્ધદર્શન વિશે પ્રભાવશાળી રીતે વક્તવ્યો આપ્યાં. એ સમયે ભારતીય યુવતીઓ અમેરિકામાં અભ્યાસ કરે તે માટે શિષ્યવૃત્તિનો પ્રારંભ કર્યો એની સાથે ભારતમાં દુષ્કાળ હોવાથી જહાજ દ્વારા અમેરિકાથી ચાલીસ ટન અનાજ મોકલવાની વ્યવસ્થા કરી.
આ જ વીરચંદ ગાંધીએ ઈન્ડિયન નેશનલ કોંગ્રેસના સર્વપ્રથમ અધિવેશનમાં મુંબઈ પ્રતિનિધિ તરીકે પણ કામગીરી બજાવી હતી. અમેરિકાની ધરતી પર ભારતની રાજકીય સ્થિતિ, અર્થકારણ અને સામાજિક પરિસ્થિતિ વિશે માર્મિક વિચારો પ્રગટ કર્યા અને સાથોસાથ યોગ વિદ્યા, આહારવિજ્ઞાાન, એકાગ્રતા, ભારતીય સંગીત અને ધ્યાન પ્રણાલીની વાત કરી, આટલું વિષય વૈવિધ્ય અને પ્રભાવક રજૂઆત અન્યત્ર ક્યાંય મળતી નથી.
આવા સંસ્કૃતિપુરુષનું સ્મરણ થાય, એવી ભાવના સાથે સહુએ નૂતન પરોઢનો પ્રારંભ અનુભવ્યો.

Misinformation and Misrepresentation by ToI on Sex

Recently ToI wrote on Sex. There was no author mentioned so it might be the official position. This is written as the ongoing controversy regarding sexual exploitation of a minor by Asaram but ToI has needlessly brought Christianity in the controversy of Asaram. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Unlike-in-Christianity-sex-isnt-taboo-in-Hindu-spirituality/articleshow/22355745.cms

The title is controversially titled, “Unlike in Christianity, sex isn’t taboo in Hindu spirituality”. You might think this might be related to use of sex in some rituals. But you read further and see the examples of some modern spiritualists as having family. Obviously the article doesn’t quote any examples of Christian leaders having family. E.g. Widow of slain Graham Stains is continuing the work amongst the lepers which was started around 100 years prior and where many such families have worked. It would be pretty big list if I start to list out the names of the married Christians who provided exemplary service to the nation. In most of the Reformed (non-Catholic) traditions, the leaders are always married and have family. ToI also mentions that Hindu rishis had families. Again, ToI doesn’t bother to add that Apostles of Jesus were having family or that how in the Bible family is considered very important. According to Bible celibacy is not the preferred mode, family is. Celibacy is allowed only after serious consideration and utmost commitment.

So, you are left with the thinking that ToI doesn’t differentiate between Catholicism and Christianity and that they are just writing on Catholics. But then you read the quote from the famous Tantric Rajneesh. The quote reads the celibacy as a vow has to be voluntary. Even in this case ToI doesn’t explain the Catholic tradition on celibacy vow. Is it voluntary? Or is it forced? I know of many Catholics who started the path to priesthood and couldn’t cope and came back to normal life, without any hiccups from community. So, does ToI hints in quoting Rajneesh that vow of celibacy has to be voluntary but it can just span a period and then you resume again? Like how Rajneesh used to Tantric Sex?

So, I don’t think official position of ToI understands bible, Catholicism or the non-Catholic Christianity as being practiced in India.

But in one aspect the title seems right. Sex is used in Tantric sex a Yogic way to Nirvana in one stream Hinduism. Vishal Mangalwadi has painstakingly studied Hindu Gurus and written on how sex is used by many Gurus in their tradition. But alas, this is the only thing ToI doesn’t mention. What a pity!

Objectionable Christmas Cards Distributed in Orissa

The distribution of an objectionable picture of Jesus Christ with a can beer and a cigar on his hands, printed in Christmas greeting cards in Koratpur, Orissa hurts the religious sentiments of Christians all over the world.

Our correspondent Rev Ashish Parida reported that amid the biggest festival of Christians, malicious pictures of Jesus Christ holding a can beer in one hand and a cigar on the other hand was distributed in different areas of Koratpur during the Christmas season.

It was alleged that Manohar Randhari, a local politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) distributed the cards on Christmas Day.

Tension gripped in several parts of the district as protests were staged by Christian groups against the hate- Christians Christmas cards. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 (joining unlawful assembly armed with deadly weapons) were clamped near the Church and along the national highway and 201 (giving false information to screen offenders) near the entry and exit points of towns. Additional police force was also deployed in the town, reported our correspondent.

Manohar Rabdhari said he didn’t check the image printed on the card, and that "it was a mistake by the printing press in Bhubaneswar which was printed hurriedly".


Christian vehicle burned on Christmas Day in Orissa

A group of miscreants on Christmas Day burned a vehicle belonging to a Christian worker in Phulbani, Orissa.

Our correspondent, Ashish Parida reported that suspected anti- Christian people set on fire the vehicle of Suranjan Naik in the hospital campus where the vehicle was parked. At the time of the incident, Naik and his wife were away in another area. As soon as the news reached Suranjan Naik, he contacted the Superintendent of Police of Kondhamal and fire brigade was called in to put out the fire.

According to some eye witnesses, a group of suspected Hindu extremists went to the hospital in Kandhamal where the wife of Rev.Naik works as Superintendent of Nurses. The extremists poured kerosene oil at the door of Naik’s house but later set fire to Naik’s car and left shouting aggressive slogans.

Police protection was provided to Naik’s home and office. Investigation is underway but no arrests have been made at press time.

Side note: Suspicions point to the radical Hindu Samanova Kui Samaj Samiti, because in a recent meeting that took place in the Kandhamal Rev. Suranjan Naik had clashed verbally with Lombodhar Kanha, Ksss leader in Kandhamal. In front of a government representative, Suranjan Nayak had harshly criticized Lombodhar Kanha, accusing his movement of creating problems and attacking peaceful Christians who only want to practice their faith. On that occasion the Rev. Suranjan Nayak had asked the authorities to take measures against the radical Hindus, reported our correspondent.


Pastor attacked in Karnataka

Karnataka police on 5 January arrested a pastor after alleged Hindu extremists attack him and seriously injured him in Davengere, Karnataka.

The incident took place at about 8:30 p.m on 2 January when the extremists barged into the prayer service conducted by Pastor Isaac Samuel in Akki Pikki normadic community.

Objecting to the prayer meeting, the extremists hurled an ax towards the pastor. The chopper fortunately missed the pastor’s head and hit his shoulder which grievously wounded him. The pastor was admitted in the hospital and he received dozens of stitches. The Christian filed a police complaint.

However, in response to the counter claim against the pastor by the Hindu extremists, the police arrested Pastor Samuel in a hospital under IPC Section 153A for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion.

It was also reported that Pastor Samuel’s wife and his two teen children are an unfortunate witnesses to the ghastly incident. They were in terrible shock.


Police warns Christians not to conduct prayer meetings in Karnataka

Karnataka police on 24 December warned a Christian not to conduct cottage prayer meetings after alleged Hindu extremists opposed to the prayer meetings and accused him of forceful conversion.

Our correspondent reported that alleged Hindu extremists attacked the prayer meetings conducted in Sampath Kamath’s house and filed a complaint against him at Manipal police alleging that he is forcefully converting Hindu people to Christianity.

It was reported that area extremists’ leader identified only as Ratna has been setting up the local villagers to filed a complaint against Kamath claiming that the prayer meetings disturbed the neighbors. He also alleged that the Christian attempted to attack him one night bringing with him more than half a dozen people in an ambassador car.

The Christian filed a complaint against the extremists but the police warned him not to conduct future meetings in home for safety measures and also forced him to put in writing that he will not conduct such meetings in his home.


Pastor Kidnapped and harassed in Andhra Pradesh

Alleged Hindu extremists kidnapped a pastor and forced him to worship at a Hindu temple on 26 in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh.

Our correspondent reported that the extremists with their faces covered grasped Pastor Jonathan D from behind, pushed him into a vehicle and took him around for about 6 hours.

The next day, the extremist forced the Christian to enter a temple in a thick forested area and beat him up when he refused to go inside .However, the extremists forcefully took him in and forced him to bow down before the idols and to shout “Jai Shri Ram” while they continued to beat, verbally abused and threatened him.

However, the pastor was able to escaped on 28 midnight while the assailants were fast asleep. He walked about 15 kms and found a main road which leads to Gulbarga (Karnataka) and then to Patancheru, Andhra Pradesh and called his family.

His family and church members came to pick him up by auto rickshaw and returned to Medak.


Christian assaulted in Madhya Pradesh

Hindu extremists allegedly from the Bajrang Dal and Dharam Sena on 26 Dec 2010 attack a pastor, seriously injuring him in Damoh Naka, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.

Our correspondent, Rev Akhilesh Edgar reported that evangelist Devanand Dandale was distributing gospel tracts when four extremists stopped him and questioned him from where he get his money and started beating him up. They kicked, punched slapped and pull his hair, taking rupees 4000/- from him.

According to reports, the money was borrowed from some friends in order to have some ready cash with him to meet the expenses of his pregnant wife, who is due for delivery any time within the next month.

Local dailies published the incident, stating that the convert Christian is forcefully converting people to Christianity

The Christian filed a police complaint against the attackers. His mobile phone was returned to him but the police have no clue as to where the money was.


Christians harassed in Madhya Pradesh

Hindu extremists from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on 31 December 2010 attack a pastor and his church, seriously injuring believers in Lalbarra, Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh.

The incident took place when about 25 angry extremists barged in the worship meeting of Alpha Bible Church , took the Bible from Pastor Mahendra Nagdeve, tore it up and beat him and the Church members.

The extremists broke church furniture, sound system, church vehicle and took thousand rupees from one church member. The extremists also grasped one lady and put her head inside a bowl put on cooking stove. Fourteen members including the pastor were hospitalized.

The matter was reported at Lalbarra police station and a case was registered against the attackers. But no arrests have been made at press time.

Quite a few Hindus have recently come to the conclusion that that very procedure is the only way to solve their Islam problem: immersing Muslims in the scientific temper and helping them to see through the irrational basis of their beliefs in Mohammed's deluded voice-hearing (a.k.a. the Quranic revelation). Instil the scientific outlook and the darkness of superstition will recede like snow under the sun.
Whether Hinduism amounts to superstition and Christianity to rational religion is a different question; that's where Macaulay's limitations as a child of his time and his culture come in. Atheists in his country wanted Christianity to go down along with Hinduism, Islam and all other religions. PANAJI: A 38-year-old Catholic priest lost his life after he rescued three youths, swept away by high currents at the Galjibag sea shore, 60 kms from here.

The incident took place yesterday when Fr Thomas Fernandes as a part of the group of parishioners from Nuvem village, had gone picnicking on the beach.

Eye witnesses reveal that a bunch of youngsters had ventured into the sea. As they were dragged in by the under current, the priest ran for rescue when the group cried for help.

The priest was rushed to the district hospital at Margao after he saved two young girls and a boy from the watery grave, but was pronounced dead by doctors on arrival.

"He collapsed after rescuing the youngsters. Desperate attempts were made to resurrect him but we failed," Savio Moniz, part of 56-member-group that went for annual picnic, told reporters outside the hospital here.
